The story goes the French Air Force operating against African Rebels found themselves hamstrung by many of the same inane restrictions and rules of engagement as had become familiar to US forces in Southeast Asia. Forbidden to use ordinance which might actually get the job done, someone came up with the idea of employing phycological warfare by using one "weapon" they had in plenty; empty beer bottles. Skyraiders would fly low over insurgent units and a crewman would toss the bottles overboard as they went past. The rebels, hearing the weird warbling whistle of the bottle's decent through the air, thought they were being attacked with some new and terrible weapon, and would go to ground for hours waiting for something really horrible to happen.
Hey, it's a great story; and if it ain't true, it outta be.
